WP API Yoast SEO for WordPress

So I was working on a custom React frontend for a WordPress site, pulling content via the REST API. Everything was fine until I realized none of the Yoast SEO fields were showing up in the response. Like, no focus keywords, no meta descriptions, nothing. It was a total bummer because my app needed that stuff for proper rendering. Then I found this little plugin - WP API Yoast SEO for WordPress - and boom, it just added the Yoast data under a `yoast_meta` field in every post or page response.

The good stuff

It’s exactly what it claims to be: a tiny plugin that injects Yoast SEO data into the standard WordPress REST API output. No extra setup, no config hell. Just install it, activate it, and suddenly every post object has ayoast_metakey with all the usual Yoast goodies - meta description, focus keyword, social titles, you name it. I was able to grab that info in my React app without needing a separate API call or complex hooks. It saved me at least two days of work. And since it’s free and light, there’s no reason not to try it if you’re doing any kind of headless WordPress setup.

The not-so-good

It’s not flashy, and honestly, it only does one thing. If you’re not using the REST API, this is useless. Also, the developer is unknown, which makes me pause a bit. No changelog, no support forum, just a GitHub link that hasn’t been updated in years. That said, it works as advertised - so unless you’re paranoid about unlisted plugins, it’s not a big deal. And if you’re not doing API-heavy builds, skip it. It’s not going to help you optimize your site’s SEO in the backend.

Bottom line

If you’re building something with the WordPress REST API and need access to Yoast SEO data, this plugin is worth a download. It’s free, it works, and it does exactly what it says. For headless devs, it’s a solid time-saver. But if you’re just managing a regular site, you’re better off ignoring it. And yeah, it’s called WP API Yoast SEO for WordPress for WordPress - weird naming, but whatever. It gets the job done.
